How much does a bus driver makes in Norway?

How much does a bus driver makes in Norway?
Hi All, How much does a bus driver makes per 40 hours in Oslo, Norway? I heard it is good money...

1 :
According to this site, bus drivers in Norway make 22,655 kroners per month, so about 5,500 kroners per week (40 hours). In US dollars, this is between $1,771 and $2,633 per month.
2 :
You have to compare it with cost of living though. It's about 260,000 300,000 Kr per year based on adverts on NAV (search on Bussjåfør). Cost of apartments are high and that will swallow a big chunk of any wage. Food costs, car procies, general living costs are all very high so this has to be taken into account. Oslo is rated as the 4th most expensive international city after Moscow, Tokyo and London.

How much would a profession like this make in norway?

How much would a profession like this make in norway?
If you happen to be a Finishing Contractor in Norway, as in freelance, would you be making a lot of money? Lets say u live outside of Oslo? Are people in this profession considered wealthy, or just have enough to feed a family of 2-3? As a Finishing contractor, and a strong believer of the Christian Faith, can he also be an elder of a church there? putting together financial and professional status...?

You'd be around average income I think based on the wages for full time employees in construction. It will vary though as depending on the specific business they may have specialist skills, etc that command a higher premium. Depends which church he's in, not sure the church of Norway has elders, but they do have a parish council. Obviously there are other churches. I take it he speaks Norwegian as that would be a bit of a stumbling block
2 :
The pay of most jobs in Norway is fairly equal, meaning people generally earn a good living wage but few are wealthy. Taxes increase as salary increases. If you have a family, both parents usually work, as living on one wage in a country as expensive as Norway isn't ideal. I don't think the Church of Norway has elders either, but free churches usually do, although financial/professional status doesn't really play a part. Norway is statistically the least religious country in the western world though, which means you may not be satisfied with the options and community. Only 36% consider themselves religious at all, and less than 3% attend church regularly (monthly or more). I actually don't know anyone that goes to church and the figures are even lower in Oslo. As mentioned above, either of your questions would require a fluent Scandinavian language. Norwegians speak excellent English, but it's not the language of business or social life here.

Should I date him?? 10 points?

Should I date him?? 10 points?
We go to the same high school. We live in Norway. His dad owns a company and they're like SUPER rich. He lives in a big mansion in the suburbs. When I was carrying a H&M bag in my hand, he like spelled it out: "h and m, huh". He only wears Armani, Tommy Hilfiger, CK and he always have Hugo Boss perfume on. I mean, I don't really shop in H&M alot, I love fashion, so I prefer Chanel, Dior etc. but I just bought a cute necklace there. I hate how he makes fun of people that are not as rich as he & his family. But I still LIKE him. A LOT. He's hot. He's tall. He's nice to me. He has gorgeous eyes. He's rich. He's REALLY smart. He's gonna heir his dad's company. But he's like really RUDE and he's showing off to other people with his parents' money.... Love, Zara ♥

if you really like him then go for it! but be careful if hes really rude to others he may end up being rude to you too. lots of rich people are spoiled.
2 :
No, no, no. People like this need to get a reality check before they are fit for a 2-way relationship. He seems very selfish, and childish. Exactly what a man should not be. I think you're letting his money and good looks get in the way of seeing who he really is. But it's your call. Good luck!
3 :
I would date him if you really do care for him. Him being rude like that could just be because of his age. You know how guys are. They never mature as fast as girls do. I would give him a chance, but let him know how you feel about him being rude to other people by flaunting his money. Try to explain to him how it hurts others feelings when you put them down. If he really likes you he probably will listen to you, but I wouldnt expect a quick change. He has grown up rich, so it will probably take him a little while to see the other side of life. good luck with LOVE:)
4 :
I wouldn't date him. He is not only rude, but he is also superficial. How can one judge someone considering the clothes or the perfume one wears? Why should I spend thousands of euros on clothes that have nothing more than some clothes for about 100??? I would better go and explore this world or invest the money in something useful. And I actually do not understand why he is acting like this because there are not his own money, he didn't do absolutely anything for them. And wearing designer perfume is not such a big deal. My father also wears Hugo Boss and he is not rich, he is just a normal person with a normal job. Finally a bottle of this perfume is about 30 euro and not 150 euro like Creed or others even more expensive. Oh, and I have a question for you: are you ready to give up your friends or your family? Because I doubt he will ever be able to accept them and by the way he speaks and treats the others I tend to believe that he will also not be accepted by the people in your life.

How do I get my motivation back? (violin)?

How do I get my motivation back? (violin)?
When I was 2 or 3 I used to pick up my mother's violin and "play" it on my lap while singing Baa, Baa, Blacksheep. When my siblings played, I'd listen in, begging to get lessons, too. I grew up being told by everyone that I was a "wonder child" with huge potential. I got my first violin when I was 4, and immediately started playing one of Mozart's Divertimentos with my family's quartet (dad on flute, sister on cello, brother on viola, mother on violin) after I showed them that I'd picked up the leading melody by heart just by listening to them. I started playing the viola when I was about 8, and the piano when I was 10. I took lessons from one of Norway's great violinists, Terje Moe Hansen, I attended a hugely prestigious musical academy called Barratt Due, I practiced for an hour a day, and then ... it just got less and less fun. The big collapse came when my parents divorced when I was 11. My mother went abroad and my dad didn't force me to practice. So gradually I just played less and less and now that I'm 19, I'm "taking a break". I played in the same orchestra as the now-international Alexander Rybak and Vilde Frang Bjerke, I have an Italian violin that's worth beteen $10,000 and $20,000, and overall I just feel like a huge failure. My parents have invested so much money in this, and I was always told I could become professional, that I could go international. I can't let go of the feeling that there still is some talent left in me. I still play the piano (my latest piece is Beethoven's Sonate Pathétique) but that was not my original passion! I used to play Kreisler-Pugnani's Prelude&Allegro, and now when I pick the violin up raw I can hardly play Meditation from Thaïs without making any errors. What should I do to get my motivation back? I don't want to sit as an adult regretting that I never got back into it? Please give me some advice, guys. I just don't want to quit permanently. N4SXX: Send a $15,000 violin to you? To you? "Send"? No thanks :D The seller offered to buy it back from me for double what I paid. I said no way. I'm never letting go of my Italian beauty.

I had the same issue with playing piano - all of a sudden I just didn't enjoy it as much. But I came back in full swing when I found popular music that I really enjoyed from my favorite artists or movies, and I started playing those songs instead of the typical classic music I used to play. I found it much more enjoyable. So perhaps you should try the same! Good luck!
2 :
If you don't want to quit permanently, then don't. Pick up that violin and play. It will take some time to play as well as you used to be because there is a physical element in playing an instrument. If you were an athlete and didn't play your sport for several years, you couldn't suddenly start again and expect your muscles and reflexes to be the same. You are also troubled by doubt, regrets, and fears. Fine, let your feelings out in your music. Think of music as life itself. You make mistakes in life, but you have a choice of learning from them or giving up. You will make mistakes when you play, but....? Do you have a current violin teacher? You might need to relearn things you've forgotten. As for switching instruments or genres of music, that is something you must follow your own heart and mind on. Simply switching will simply mean you will still have to work as hard or even harder, but in a different way.
3 :
"I don't want to sit as an adult regretting that I never got back into it" - sounds like you are already doing that... pick it up and play. what type of motivation advice could any of us offer you - you have done more that most here....
4 :
Hi, from what I went through a few years ago, it's a matter of finding an inspiration that picks you back up again, whatever that may be for you... I hated my violin for a while, but after making some new friends (musos) and finding new music, it slowly got me interested again. New music to me means something new and contemporary. Also, at that time, I joined a musical pit orchestra. That took heaps of energy, and it was heaps of fun. It wasn't a professional stage type thing, but it was fun. Music doesn't have to be all about solo-istic works. Even though you are capable to be the next big violinist (from what you've indicated) and become a pro violinist that I'll know the name of, go back to the basics, forget your own expectations, and just have fun! Best of luck!
5 :
listen to some tony robbins tapes
6 :
just send the violin to me and continue playing the piano and dreading the fact that you are a quitter I am 48 and wish that I had the chance to learn with a teacher BUT alas I am forced to learn on my own

I miss them so much..?

I miss them so much..?
im born and raised in norway by one norwegian mother, and a middle-eastern father. im now sixteen currently attending at high school. My father is 59 years old, bitter, angry and many times when he say something, it is always his word that matter. I've observed how he acts and i've noticed that everytime he acuses someone of something,(and makes a bigger thing about it than it really is) but then finds out he is wrong, he suddenly finds another excuse, just to feel right. He doesnt say "im sorry". that is so "typical western" he says. And sometimes im confused because sometimes I really love my dad, is that maybe because of the gifts he gives me at my birthday/christmas? Now, my mothers side of the family. I hardly know them, they used to and we (me my brother and my mom not my dad he didnt want to) used to travel to them to be together. Now that we are talking about my dad not wanting to go. He is so weird. He is also very greedy. This one time, we were planning on painting the whole house(inside), my dad talked to a few polish painters, and what he said when they left was: Those polish cant paint. and they want that much money? The second reason why my father didnt want anyone to paint our house was because he didnt want them to use the bathroom. Come on! We are all humans for f**k sake.. So what really happened was that he did the whole thing by himself just because of that. Anyways, the other part of our family, I love them. But I am only sixteen, i cant move out yet. and I cant imagine how my father must feel if I leave.. Any tips/good word of advice? Thank you in advance. Best Regards.

I can understand your frustration with your Dad and at your age that is normal. You are becoming a man who will one day branch out on your own. Middle eastern men have nprmally (not always) a very autocratic mentality - they are the head of the house and what they says goes. But they normally love their children very much. Western society is more equal between husband and wife (generally speaking) . May I suggest you just bide your time and study hard and try to stay clear of your father when he is in his dark moods and it won;t be long before you are off to University and then eventually you will have a good job and then can decide where you want to live. Hang in there mate ... you'll be right (eventually) - obviously you are more Norwegain than middle eastern right? Incidentally painting the house himself is an illustration of his 'stingyness' not 'Greed'. Good luck ............MGD

America's Political Practice. The Electoral College and Popular Vote. The People.?

America's Political Practice. The Electoral College and Popular Vote. The People.?
I strongly disagree with the way America's Political System operates. A presidential candidate (PC) can win the popular vote and still lose the election. This is because the electoral college (EC) chooses the next president. The people vote in their state. Then the members of the EC choose the candidate corresponding to the majority party vote by the people. I now see this on going pattern in presidential elections. If the candidate wins the EC votes of California, New York, Texas, Montana and Florida he is almost guaranteed victory. I believe this is unfair to everyone. This is a proposition that I hope does not occur but then again, how could you stop it. --- The presidential candidate makes deals and gives the EC of states opportunities if they just vote for him. "The people don't choose me, you choose me." So I believe the PC just has to suck the dicks of the EC and he wins. It's political injustice to not let the people's choice win if the PC won the popular vote. I believe in proportional representation like in Norway. If 13% of the people living in the state want Nazism or Radical Totalitarianism as the political system than 13% of the seats in the house or congress will be occupied by politicians that can speak for those people and their ideology. America has a two party system. And as the way things go, the independent party or green party or whatever 3rd party that vies for control will never come close to the presidency. Teddy Roosevelt's Bull Moose party was the closest to gaining the presidency and that was over 80 years ago. I think this country needs a change in it's political practice. The government is made by the people and for the people. It should change when the people ask for it. But you and I both know, asking gets us nowhere in today's society. We do not have the money. We are not political elites. We are unimportant in the eyes of those in power. We are expendable. Your congressman does not care if you die tomorrow. Paying taxes to the state is more important than your physical health. I am no democrat or republican. The political ideology is one of radical ideology. I like Totalitarianism and Authoritarianism. I would like to hear what others have to say.

our system has worked fine for 230+ years. It was set up like that for a reason and change is not needed, lest the US ends up like european countries. uh...no.
2 :
Every political system is designed to result in certain consequences. The Electoral College has a couple of huge advantages: 1. Without it, candidates would never leave the big cities and states, because that's where the votes are. Having the E-C means that smaller states get a larger say than they would normally, which would be nothing. I'm OK with that; it's not that big a difference. 2. If we had a system like Norway's where the Radical Party got 13 percent of the vote and 13 percent of the seats, we'd have a ton of parties. Few would be able to have 50 percent and thus odd coalitions would have to be formed in order to create a government. Then it would take one disagreement and you'd have to have a new election. I like the stability that the current election system creates. I think a third party win for President is possible under the right set of circumstances. We seemed ready for one in 1992, but Ross Perot was absoutely the wrong messenger for that task. However, the two major partieis are too entrenched for a third party to seriously contest 435 races for the House and Senate. A replacement for the Republican or Democratic party is possible, like the Whigs faded and the Republicans came on, but unlikely.
3 :
And under your wacko system, if a candidate wins Los Angeles, NYC, and Chicago, which is often the case, he is almost guaranteed victory. The electoral college is an important safeguard against democracy. The people are not supposed to elect the President. "The government is made by the people and for the people. It should change when the people ask for it." Bull. The government was set up to be resistant to the ebb and flow of popular opinion. "I like Totalitarianism and Authoritarianism." Then why the crap do you want a democratic system of picking the President?
4 :
Um, hate to say this, but you are not running the numbers right. The popular vote is biased to the largest cities and the largest States. So, you would have the largest States and Cities tell people who live in Montana and Wyoming how to live?
5 :
You do seem to live up to your name. I don't see how proportional representation can remedy the problem of PCs winning presidential elections with fewer votes. You can only have one winner anyway, so who cares how the proportions go? I agree you need to get rid of electoral colleges, and then just add all the votes throughout the country and the winner is the person with the most votes. {preferential voting (choice voting) might also help.}
6 :
Our political system sucks. We are printing and spending money out of control. Our politicians hate each other let alone fix any problems. Local government sucks too. We are trying to change, we are creating a new political party that even George Washington would be proud of. http://countypublicprimary.blogspot.com/

2012...once again :P?
Now, I know what your thinkin, its one of those scared person looking for others to say "it wont happen" or "Hollywood only does it for money"..."Or god only knows when it will end...Mayans just decided to hunt for fish instead of making the calender"... But I would like a full, evidence on why...the world is not going to end...on that date of 2012... I read something about...certain governments...preparing different types of "in case" situation, Austrilla with the seeds...Norway with its ice cap chambers or whatever it is... I know 2012 the movie, is just a movie, though its based on the theory...Why cant we have a giant solar flare in 2011...and it effect us badly like it did...with the Earth quakes and such what....and...I thought the world would be covered with ash for 40 years..yet at the end of the movie..when it zoomed out you could clearly see the blue oceans, and the world was not covered in no ash. I know its a movie, I know it could be a hoax...but....I kinda want the answers to be answered. Well...the "statements" I have said :P. Btw is it true...since our calender starts Jan 1st..ends Dec 31st ..that the Mayans calender were just...more...long?... Well ty! Well, I knew I was going to get "You were stupid" from some one lol. Well...I was doing more research, and thank you. I suppose when you think about it, the 2012 movie did not go by the theory at all, with many details missing, so I guess thats a hint right there. And Rober/HmmletsSee...you say about how he predicted 9/11, world war 2..though these were all theories or well what he says about 2012...well if he was pretty close about those two why not this? And how could he anyways thats crazy :P Ty you all for the info!

There's this very long history of prior, failed predictions - http://www.abhota.info/end1.htm
4 :
The Mayans never predicted the end of the world, the calendar simply ended. Also, people may say that the calendar said "the end of the world AS WE KNOW IT" On the other hand, there is a theory that there is another planet in out Solar System, called Nibiru. It only orbits very rarely (I forget how long). The gravitational pull of Nibiru will be so huge, that it would tilt the world ever so slightly, causing earthquakes and what not. ALSO, a man named Nostradamus was a prophesier. He predicted a lot of stuff, like 9/11, World War 2, and 2012. Although he did not give a year, he gave a general time. Keep in mind, these are all theories. I find them interesting but I still don't think the world could end in one day. I think that people will freak out, commit suicide (some), and cause riots. EDIT: I forgot, the Illuminati. Their a conspiracy group that want the world to be one government. They use music artists to give out subliminal messages to have people become satanic, like they are, without even knowing it. Apparently, they will act out the coming of Jesus Christ, and if people don't believe, they will be killed. I think this is rediculous, but I do believe somewhat in the Illuminati. EDIT: I know what you mean, and I honestly can't answer that.

<But I would like a full, evidence on why...the world is not going to end...on that date of 2012...> You have this the wrong way round. It's not possible for someone to prove that something won't happen. Here's how it works. People who claim the end of the world will take place need to explain why. If they can't explain why, then there's no reason to suppose that the world won't continue, as it has done for the last 4 billion years. It's possible to look at every single doomsday claim for 2012 and dismiss it. Planet X/Nibiru - no sign of it. Pole shift - not physically possible before or during 2012. Solar storm - solar activity now expected to be lower than at the last maximum in 2001. Any planetary or solar alignment - doesn't have the slightest effect on us. And so it goes on until all the claims are dismissed and there is nothing left to distinguish 2012 from 2013, 2014, etc., in other words - just another year.
8 :
The only thing that will happen on 2012 is you'll probably lose your DirecTV satellite signal.
9 :
"But I would like a full, evidence on why...the world is not going to end...on that date of 2012..." I don't think I can prove that the world will not end in 2012. For that matter, I can't prove that the world will not end tomorrow or in 2035. There are some arguments as to why this is extremely unlikely. The earth has been around for about 4.5 billion years, life has been on earth for something like 3.5 billion years. Humans have been around for at least 250,000 years. Clearly anything that will destroy civilization or the Earth should be a very improbably event, one that happens once every million years or every billion years. The peak of the solar cycle happens once every 11 years. If we were going to get killed by solar flares or coronal mass ejections, it should have already happened. Geomagnetic reversals happen about every half million years. The last geomagnetic reversal happened 780,000 years ago. While humans were not alive, Homo erectus was, and it seemed not to have killed off our ancestors. The planet Nibiru is supposedly on a 3,600 year period. That would have given the planet plenty of time to destroy human kind through close encounters with Earth. Also people are notoriously bad at predicting the end of the world. See A Brief History of the Apocalypse for a list of dates people said the world would end but did not: http://www.abhota.info/
10 :
We can feel confident that disaster won't strike in 2012 not because we know it for a fact, but because we have no reason to think disaster will strike then. NONE of the claims hold up; they're a mix of bad science and bad history. About that "bad history" part--the Maya didn't predict disaster in 2012; their calendar cycles, not stops, and if anything they expected it to start an age of enlightenment. It is possible we'll get a big solar flare in 2011 or 2012--though it's less likely than 2013 or 2014, when solar activity is expected to peak. You see, the Sun's activity peaks *every* 11 years or so; it goes in cycles of activity. But solar flares don't really affect life on Earth. They can damage our satellites, and bad ones can damage the power grid on the ground--but that's about it. Earthquakes aren't affected by solar flares; saying a solar flare will cause quakes is equivalent to someone telling you that sunlight causes landslides, and on sunup exactly X months Y days from now we'll suffer massive landslides. That's the kind of logic that drives the doomsday predictions, once you peel away the plausible-sounding layers they surround it with. I hate to tell you this, but Nostradamus didn't predict WWII, 9/11, Hitler, or anything else in modern times. What people do is, after major events like that, they go through his quatrains looking for something they can shoehorn into looking like a prediction of the event. They often deliberately mistranslate certain words to make it fit the "prediction" better, too. Never trust a claimed Nostradamus prediction. On that note--I recall in the 80s hearing a Nostradamus prediction that World War III would be started in the 90s by some guy in the Middle East who "will come in a blue turban". I'm still waiting.

Is it wrong that I don't care what happens to me at my job?

Is it wrong that I don't care what happens to me at my job?
Only been working there for two weeks and it's been nothing but trouble (I work at a restaurant as a hostess). The head hostess thinks that it's OK to yell at me in front of customers (she tells me where to sit people, but I sometimes sit them somewhere else because the customers complain so I just give it to them to please them) and that pisses her off. She hits me really hard sometimes and taunts me about being a priss or something completely stupid. And then one of the managers is this butch dyke who sounds and looks like a man. She's very rude and treats everyone like a child. I don't appreciate how she treats me either. I see it this way. I don't really need a job. I'm moving to Norway for university next year so it doesn't really matter what I do long-term here atm. I don't need money either. I get $500 from my father. I only work because I find it REWARDING. I love to work because it makes me feel like I'm doing something important. Where this whole thing steamed from was I have a disease called G6PD which I never told anyone at my job because it comes and goes. I went into crisis 30 minutes before I was supposed to go to work so I called in; I didn't tell them that I have a disease, but I told them that I was severely sick and that I took a Vicodin which is the truth. G6PD is the cousin of sickle cell. Lemme find a definition... ::a deficiency of an enzyme - G6PD - in red blood cells, causing hemolytic anemia. The sad thing is I always find awful jobs; why are people so cruel? I've had two jobs that were great though, but I had to leave them because of school starting. I wish I worked there again, at least I felt appreciated and that I'm not dog crap on the bottom of someone's shoe.

What is G6Pd, and what does it have to do with the way your co-workers are mistreating you? They are wrong, you (from your statement here) are right. And to the girl putting her hands on you, she should be fired.
2 :
Tell your boss the truth about your disease and how you are treated. I bet things change. If not, go over his/her head and report abuse in the workplace. You should care what happens in your job because it is your reputation and will affect future jobs.
3 :
Ahh that is awful. There is a number you can call for anyone who mistreats you or abuses you on the job... whether it is verbal abuse or they are physically touching you and hurting you! The number should be somewhere in the paper work you got when you first started or they must have it somewhere within your work place! I would suggest that you call the number and see what happens. They should get in trouble for their actions and if they do not then quit and go find a better job where the people you worked with aren't such mean people !
4 :
No I would not care either if I were in your situation. That is terrible. Do you want to really stick it out or just quit? If it gets to bad go to human resources and complain to the company. That is what I would do.
5 :
Tele the head hostess to piss off in front of the customers when she yells at you. See if she wants to go higher up and complain. Let her defend herself. Waht have you to lose?
6 :
Although you will find those type of people in any workplace, no one deserves to be treated that way. If I were you, I'd quit. Like you said, you don't need the money, so why stay there and take their cr@p? Find a new job.
7 :
"She hits me really hard sometimes." Stop right here. If you mean that the hostess physically assaults you, you need to contact the police and press charges. Whether you keep the job or not, your employer, and your co-workers, do not have the right to physically assault you, or anyone else. I would think that if you take care of this, that will serve as a good example to the manager, and others, about how they need to act.
8 :
Nobody deserves to be abused or mistreated no matter what . Always have respect for yourself and everyone else will . Allow no-one to hit you . Speak up for yourself ..or the next thing you know real trouble could happen .

The 5 happiest Countries are all Socialist Economies, With Health Care and Education included in your taxes?

The 5 happiest Countries are all Socialist Economies, With Health Care and Education included in your taxes?
http://travel.yahoo.com/p-interests-35010143 The five happiest countries in the world — Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands — are all clustered in the same region, and all enjoy high levels of prosperity. Wait I thought all socialist Countries, were Gray and Desperate places.. sort of Stalin meets Blade Runner ? notice the word prosperity.... pops up repeatedly in this article. I know that so many of you on here really don't understand the difference between "Free Market" rhetoric and actual prosperity for more than the top 1%... but we used to consistently rank in this poll, right up until the early 90's ... that's around the time we started hearing the term "New World Order" Deregulated corporatism is making someone happy but it isn't the average American.. see the full list.. http://www.forbes.com/2010/07/14/world-happiest-countries-lifestyle-realestate-gallup_slide_12.html We don't even Rank.. Canada and Costa Rica were the only entries from the Americas (Both fully Socialist) Ask yourself this Tea Baggers and the like.... If we are so wonderful as we move away towards a full corporate Oligarchy, why then do we cast Socialism as a Villain? After all when we're the most social is when we've had the most prosperity... post WW2 we almost got Euro Style Health Care but the AMA smashed it with the free market demigod Regan's help... but if you look at our history as a nation, when we embrace people instead of Money we do better as a culture.. can you really gage happiness by GDP? and if so.. are we not an abject failure being the personal debt accounts for nearly 100% of GDP http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2009/02/household_debt_vs_gdp.html 1927 and 2007 (both times personal debt reached 100% of GDP our leadership was corporate-centric) Basic economics guys... who should be happier in a society ? The people or Vampires I mean Corporations/Banks/Insurance Co.'s etc? Americans really don't want to be happy then? If that's the case then this all makes perfect sense... And if any of you Apple Pie eating patriots would genuinely like to see me leave (and I'll take my Commie wife and kids with me...) write out a check, we'll get on a plane.. (buh bye) And if any of you Apple Pie eating patriots would genuinely like to see me leave (and I'll take my Commie wife and kids with me...) write out a check, we'll get on a plane.. (buh bye) We have Higher debt and are "More" Bankrupt than any of those countries Suicide rates "Finland" is the only one in the list to make the top 10 based on the W.H.O. report.. None of the Suicide indexes are any newer than 2007..would love to see where we rank now... These countries do not have resources, in fact quite to the contrary.. however in regards to being able to power themselves with alternative energy you a;ll can thank yourselves for that... we've allowed big oil to block alternatives for 30 years.. we should be leading that technological race...but like everything else we do now... we are losing our edge... must be our low IQ.. Canadians do not pay 80% of their incomes in Tax, in fact the Average Brit, Canadian, Frenchman, middle class worker all pay less than their American counterpart if you include education and Health care/Elder care... we pay MORE TAXES PEOPLE!!!!

Maybe you should move to one of them and then you can be happy too
2 :
By all means....get the phuck out...please move there. thanks
3 :
If by happiest you will be stuck in whatever the government pigeon holes you at until you die than by all means you can be happy. I wont.
4 :
I really don't care. I want my country back. And while you are attempting to appear informed, it is TEA Partiers.
5 :
Economy isn't the only factor to consider. Population, size, climate, demographics, religion, environment, etc. all play rolls as well.
6 :
Ok, Then please, move to one of those countires. I noticed several people aon here who would be more than happy to help you do that.
7 :
Why is the EU melting down if their economies work? Too much spending, it isn't working. We are following down the same destructive path and expecting a different outcome. Hmmm, don't see how we can deny the inevitable and yet it happens constantly.
8 :
So the socialists claim they are 'happier' than the rest of us? Of course they would have to site something as amorphous as the concept of 'happiness' since they certainly cannot claim to be more prosperous or free. P.S Check the suicide rates in those countries.
9 :
Well they can thank US "unhappy capitalists" for the fact that they have a country at all..to be "happy" with.
10 :
Happiness is subjective, and the results of these surveys depend entirely on the scoring criteria. Suicides per capita, for example, is not one of the metrics in this study.
11 :
Americans live in an insular little bubble, believing what they are told to believe. That the US is the best country on Earth. Of course they aren't going to believe you. After all, the majority of people (especially on here) are under the false impression that everyone in the entire world wants to move to the US. Laughable isn't it? Poles like the one you posted only prove that either the developed countries of the world is right and we are wrong...or we are right and the developed countries are wrong. I wonder which it is? lol I commend you for trying to bring an issue like this to light, however you will soon find out that it is falling on deaf ears. Donna
12 :
#1 They all aren't PURE "socialist" countries. They are mixed economies. #2 Most, if not all, of those Countries are extremely small (landsize / population) & blessed with significant resources that enable them to "fund" those socialist projects. For instance, there are Countries on that list that can single handily supply their population with energy from hydro-electric plants (damns). Could the U.S. supply all their energy from a hydro-electric damn? Not a chance in hell. Some of them also have significant oil reserves that they sell for a profit (again, paying for their socialist projects). The U.S., given our population level, does not have a corresponding "oil" reserve that could pay for $300 million people in such a fashion.
13 :
Aaah yes, those happy, happy Fins... Who just happen to have suicide rate 70% higher than the US. Funny how morons go off about how happy these countries are.. when these people are knocking themselves off left and right.. Happy people don't do that. You = Fail.
14 :
Since you mentioned "basic economics" - those countries are all on the verge of bankruptcy. Those systems are unsustainable. They probably won't be as happy when all the government programs vanish. Contrary to what socialists believe, deficits and debts do matter. And they're what cause nations to collapse.
15 :
If we had someone else paying almost all of our defense costs for 65 years we would be pretty happy too. We have completely underwritten all of these socialist "utopias" ever since World War II. Without us they would all be Soviet satellite states. edit: Why should I write a check to send you to Scandinavia? Can't you do anything for yourself?
16 :
What? Are you trying to tell me that living in a Republican police state with Walmart Hospitals, a Haliburton owned military and a Muslim holocaust would not be a happy place? There would be government mandated tea party meetings to lynch gays and Mexicans! Happiness doesn't help to sell fear and hate.
17 :
Statistics can say whatever you want them to say. Without looking at the methodology there is little to say about their results as the weightings given to each factor are critical in determining the final rankings.
18 :
You think this is an awesome question too, don't you? Not only did you miss the point entirely in that it shouldn't matter what style of economy we have... "The problem is us. The problem is not the banks, greedy though they may be, overpaid though they may be. The problem is us... We've been living very high on the hog. Our living standard has been rising dramatically in the last 25 years. And we have been borrowing much of the money to make that prosperity happen." ...but you leave this question wide open as does everyone else who talks about this as to imply that we operate under pure capitalism while pure socialism is the answer. What amazes me even more is that a socialist economy asks the government...the ones who are currently bankrupting our future, to take the reins of our futures. How does this even make sense to you? Or when people cry out about how corrupt and evil corporate America is...you mean the corporate America that is run, regulated and funded by the government? How does any of this even make sense to you.
19 :
Would you really be happy paying up to 80% of your income so that a national government can take care of you and determine your value? Would you really be happy waiting up to a year of needed medical testing because there are not enough doctors to assist you, would you really be happy knowing that the government has the final say about everything concerning your life and that of your family? Would you really be happy knowing that you work 50 times harder to earn and live on the same amount as someone who does nothing? Or would you rather have health care when you actually need it, be able to earn more through your hard work, be able to obtain wealth and be able to raise your family as you see fit? By the way, Canada is NOT socialist, they are a lot more liberal leaning than the US but not socialist. They are actually, as of recent debates, learning they can no longer afford their national health care and will soon require their citizens to start obtaining private insurance in order to keep treating people. Also many of the nations you list are not purely socialist, even communist China is no longer purely socialist as they have incorporated capitalist concepts into their country, because they realize it actually works to grow their nation and economy. Another concept for your departure, try to get one of those "happy" countries to support your entry into their country and see how far you get. Frankly, I am very happy in the country I live in and as long as those who would like to take it over do not do so, I am more than happy to stay right here in a capitalist nation where I have the freedom to decide where I work, how I obtain health care, and where I work.
20 :
I thought this was a well-thought out question until you used the term "Tea Baggers" - why is it that you people can't stop yourselves from calling other people names? Reading it more closely, it seems that you are just making up your own facts and saying nothing. Anyway, where do you get the idea that Costa Rica is a "Fully Socialist Country?" "Costa Rica is a democratic republic, as stated by the 1949 Constitution, which guarantees all citizens and foreigners equality before the law, the right to own property, the right of petition and assembly, freedom of speech, and the right to habeas corpus, among others. The government is divided into independent executive, legislative, and judicial powers. " http://infocostarica.com/general/government.html And Canada? "Officialy, Canada is a confederation with parliamentary democracy. That means Canada's system is patterned partly after Great Britian's, but also has a federal system like that in the United States. The federal government holds considerable power in areas of national concern, such as health insurance, trade, the military, and development. Provincial governments have authority over education, property laws, and medical facilities." And here's a little fact about Denmark: "The Constitutional Act lays down the framework of Danish democracy. It outlines the citizens’ rights or human rights such as freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, which i.a. are intended to protect them against infringement of their rights by the State. " http://www.denmark.dk/en/menu/About-Denmark/Government-Politics I think that your poll leaves out tons of information about those "happy countries" compared to the US. Socialism is not a demon, especially if you have a relatively small population of similar socio-economic and ethnic groups, living in a similar climate and The population of Norway is under 5,000,000, with about 84% of the population being ethnic Norwegians. The population of Denmark is just under 6,000,000, with 5,000,000 of them being ethnic Danes. Further, in Denmark, 84% of the population is urban. Costa Rica, also with a population of around 5,000,000, is comprised of about 95% whites and mestizos. So why can't we draw the conclusion that happiness comes from living with people like you - and not too many of them? In fact, your article states that one of the reasons for Costa Rican's happiness is strong family bonds and social networking. New Jersey, by comparison, has a population of almost 9,000,000 - there are no fewer than 12 languages spoken in the state, and has a multiplicity of ethnic groups including whites, blacks, hispanics, portugese, creole, polish, russian and others. Expand that to encompass the entire US, with a population of 300,000,000; with many, many different races and ethnic groups, with cities, suburbs - climate variation from the swampland of Florida to the northern tip of Alaska. The US is not "Corporate Centric". The US provides opportunity for people to direct their own lives, to produce based on free market economics instead of government mandate. This does not happen in the absence of government - there are government regulations directing the banks, the insurance companies, manufacturing, service - we are a nation of laws and businesses and consumers operate within those laws. What we object to is when the laws start to dictate who gets what, and who has too much. Why should my tax money, as a resident of New Jersey, be spent on building roads in West Virginia so that Robert Byrd can get re-elected? (I use him as an example because he was admired for all the Federal money he brought to his state) Why, as a parent of college students, should the loans I negotiated be negated and then taken over by the Federal Government? The United States Government is an incredibly corrupt institution at this point in time. All you have to do is look at how the Healthcare bill was railroaded into being - no fair votes, no one read the thing, it was forced into law by bribery, threats and arm-twisting. There is no way that I would ever agree to giving MORE power to that group of thugs. I don't know about your poll, I don't know about you - but I can tell you that MY happiness stems from my ability to direct my own life, to conduct my affairs within the laws of a reasonable country or state - I can start a business if I want to, I can live in whatever state suits my desires for climate or economic opportunity. When the government tells me that I cannot get a job because I don't meet "Diversity" requirements (which has happened to me) or that I cannot keep my health insurance because my company can no longer afford it because of the Government Requirements - I become very unhappy.

Subvertor, You can cite facts all you want, like we pay more in heath care but they have better quality, or that we are so far in debt and that oligarchs rule this country. They don't care. They are blind sheep. All we can do is continue to advocate for economic change and prosperity in the USA. All we can do is continue to fight for the worker, even when the worker doesn't even fight for himself. Keep up the good fight Subvertor.

How can my son not be affected by economy crisis at all?

How can my son not be affected by economy crisis at all?
I have three kids, two sons and one daughter. My oldest son who is 32 runs a couple business, own three houses, two business properties, and coach kick boxers and few professional fighters. He has always been the type who keeps his eyes on the economy, current event, and everything. He have always been very paranoid type, he have been hoarding on precious metals and diamond, investing, and spread moneys in couple different countries ever since he started his business. Ever since around 2004, he have been freaking out about the economy and telling everyone to start keep their eyes on the economy. But we didn’t take him seriously. My daughter who is 27 and her husband bought a house three years ago and just opened a construction business about two years ago, they are going through a incredible tough time right now. I’ve never saw my daughter so badly stressed out and upset. They’re seriously considering closing the business down and walk away from the house. On top of all this, they have two children. My youngest son is 24, just graduated from college but is still living with me and my husband because he was unable to afford to live on his own with the high gas price and trying to find a job. It just got worse for him, his car broke down and he doesn’t have the moneys to afford to repair it. My husband has been laid off from his job. He has been trying to find a new job for three weeks. We’re living off my income and our saving. I don’t understand how could my son know about everything and see all of this coming from so far away. How could he still keep his business afloat and not seems to be bothered or affected by the economy? He just returned from his trip to Norway not long ago and he didn’t even complain about how expensive it was. He’s even looking at buying a house in Slovakia. He also managed to sell almost all of his stock just a couple months before the stock crashed really bad. He’s already talking about start buying a couple houses in our area (California) soon. He also has sold almost all diamonds just because he learned that there’s new technique that allows man to make diamonds with chemicals. He also often credited his success to not having unnecressay things. Cars are one of them, he have never owned a car in his whole life. However his house has been heavily upgraded and is in a very upscale neighbor. I don’t understand how could he pull all this off and not suffer a one bit from bad economy while everybody else seems to be panicking?

HI Pat Just like your son I to told my family and friends to start saving their money a few years back because you could see that some thing bad was coming. Higher interest rates, gas prices started to go up three years ago or so, as well as the mortgage rates and the cost of houses throughout the country. I live in Hawaii and every thing here is expensive so when ever some thing changes in the lower 48 it will happen to Hawaii and it will be worst, now if thing change in the lower 48 it will not change as much in Hawaii because eventually it will get worst again. Your son was smart to put away his money and not spend it on things that were not important to his survival, except he selling off all of his diamonds thinking that because man can make diamond using chemicals, well they have been doing that for a very long time, they are call CZs or Cubic Zirconium's, they look just like diamonds only someone who know how to tell the difference will be able to see the difference. So selling his diamonds may have been just something to fall back on, his precious metals though are very good investments and should gain some ground as time goes on especially gold it is going up in price as we read and write. Now as for you son's homes, if he owns them out right no mortgages then he has nothing to worry about other than being paid the rent from his tenants. As for his trip he took on a credit card most likely so it wouldn't have hurt him to much, but with the way things right now with the banks and their interest rates it will be harder for to get in creases on his balances and if he needs to get things or equipment for his gym it will be harder for him to make loans like every one else, but if he has managed his moneys right he has a good chance of getting through the crisis in fair condition, but by no means will he get through it will out having some troubles, remember even the riches people are having some troubles. For him to buy any homes any where he will have to have a lot of expendable funds because it will not be as easy as it used to be to get a home loan that is why the country is in trouble now. Your daughter and her husband have been swept up in the mortgage crisis with out even knowing it, with a new construction business in a down turning industry. Not having work is the biggest thing in construction killing its business as fast as it took to get it started, tell your daughter instead of closing it up, down size and take the small jobs for now, like the side walk or drive ways. If it is carpentry, take the little storage sheds and railing repairs, even the handicap ramps. Take the jobs close to home or to the shop to cut down on the fuel cost, clean and repair the equipment they have now instead of buying new ones. If they can hang on for at least two years they should be alright, at this time in their lives they wont get rich but they will be able to survive they just have to think small for now. As for your young son tell him to look for the small jobs for now as well as your husband, tell them having any job is better than not having a job, besides in a few years things will be better not completely, but better. Ever one is feeling the pinch and pressures of our falling economy even the foreign countries that deal with the US, the experts believe that then can throw money at the problem to make it better, but that is not the answer, that was the problem, the more money that went in to the economy the more people wanted until it just wasn't enough yet in reality there was no money for the rest of us so what ever we had we put away, we put so much of it away that there was nothing left for others to pay their bills and once that started to happen it was just a matter of time before the neighbor and the next and the next weren't able to pay theirs even though they all work hard it just wasn't enough for those that wanted more. There really isn't an easy fix to our economy, but I believe that if the cost of homes were to drop to the prices of the 70's and 80's and stay there for at least five years, that means the government putting a limit on what a house can be sold for keeping down interest rates while allowing the dollar to stengthen the countries economic troubles will all but be a memory, but that is just me. I don't know it this is the kind of answer you were looking for, but these are the things that I believe. I hope it kind of gives you some thing new to think about and you are welcome to share my answer and thoughts with your family and friends. Take care and good luck to you and yours...Keep the Faith....Peace....cya

If you always think the sky is falling, every once in awhile you'll be lucky. You don't give much details but I would guess your son did not anticipate any of the current events, he was just a paranoid -- just as people write doomsaying books every year and are wrong 19 years out of 20. I've heard lots of people predicting calamity over the past 25 years, and not a single on of them actually predicting anything close to the chain of events that is actually happening. If you prepare for an earthquake and you get a hurricane ... your preparations may pay off and you may think you're smart, but you can't claim after-the-fact to have predicted anything accurately. However sometimes you get lucky so maybe he did this time. If he avoids unnecessary expenses, that's always a good survival technique in any climate. By the way, LOTS of people are unaffected. We're not talking the great depression here. As far as I can tell my whole state is still doing just fine.

Hi Ida. I want you to know that it is my personal experience that God can be known in a personal way, through faith in the simple Gospel message. Concerning creation, there are different views. Dr. Hugh Ross is a Christian who is also an astrophysicist; and he believes in an old earth - about 4.6 billion years old, but that this can be reconciled with the Biblical account of creation when properly interpreted. You can listen to his explanation of these puzzling questions at his website: http://www.reasons.org/ concerning coming to real faith, and just what it means to be a Christian, please listen to the following brief presentation.... http://4laws.com/laws/english/flash/

Think you're paying at the pump?

Think you're paying at the pump?
This chart is from CNN's website. Gas prices around the world (in US dollars per gallon). Pretty astonishing collection of data: Gasoline prices in the United States, which have recently hit record highs, are actually much lower than in many countries. Drivers in some European cities, like Amsterdam and Oslo, are paying nearly 3 times more than those in the U.S. The main factor in price disparities between countries is government policy, according to AirInc, a company that tracks the cost of living in various places around the world. Many European nations tax gasoline heavily, with taxes making up as much as 75 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline, said a spokesperson for AirInc. Netherlands Amsterdam $6.48 Norway Oslo $6.27 Italy Milan $5.96 Denmark Copenhagen $5.93 Belgium Brussels $5.91 Sweden Stockholm $5.80 United Kingdom London $5.79 Germany Frankfurt $5.57 France Paris $5.54 Portugal Lisbon $5.35 Hungary Budapest $4.94 Luxembourg $4.82 Croatia Zagreb $4.81 Ireland Dublin $4.78 Switzerland Geneva $4.74 Spain Madrid $4.55 Japan Tokyo $4.24 Czech Republic Prague $4.19 Romania Bucharest $4.09 Andorra $4.08 Estonia Tallinn $3.62 Bulgaria Sofia $3.52 Brazil Brasilia $3.12 Cuba Havana $3.03 Taiwan Taipei $2.84 Lebanon Beirut $2.63 South Africa Johannesburg $2.62 Nicaragua Managua $2.61 Panama Panama City $2.19 Russia Moscow $2.10 Puerto Rico San Juan $1.74 Saudi Arabia Riyadh $0.91 Kuwait Kuwait City $0.78 Egypt Cairo $0.65 Nigeria Lagos $0.38 Venezuela Caracas $0.12 In a few Latin America and Middle-East nations, such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, oil is produced by a government-owned company and local gasoline prices are kept low as a benefit to the nation's citizens, he said. All prices updated March, 2005. Source: CNN http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/

The wacko european countries end up forcing people to take public transportation and make everyone lived in crowed, rat-raced cities because the governments keep the price of gasoline so high. And, it destroys the economies of small towns by making it hard for people to travel.
2 :
Yes...we are paying at the pumps. We have the ability to produce our own oil, but for some reason there are people in congress who won't let us get it (I'm looking in the Democrats direction).
3 :
Man has the intelligence and mechanical technology and capabilities to invent (and it has been invented) vehicles that burn on natural solar energy, and the reason this hasn't been brought to fruition is because there is no money to be made and money is the reason we stay trapped in using gas for our cars.
4 :
Right, but almost all these countries have comprehensive public transportation systems which are inexpensive and run frequently and reliably. The cities are also constructed much more closely together and in smaller areas, unlike the US, which makes walking and biking much more feasible. A few decades ago, GM illegally purchased all the mass transit systems in the US and systematically shut them down so that people would be forced to buy their cars. That's when our real problems started! GM was slapped with an anti-trust lawsuit but the people responsible were only charged a few dollars each; the entire corporation was fined $1,000.
5 :
FWIW, US gas prices have not yet hit a higher record then that from the early 70's, in inflation-adjusted dollars.
6 :
Dude, what's you question?

Will a grammarian please proofread my short paper?

Will a grammarian please proofread my short paper?
This is the first two pages of a ten-page paper. Here it is... I'm really terrible with parallel constructions...: Peer Gynt, Brand, and Faust To write that Henrik Ibsen’s first two major plays, Peer Gynt and Brand, have a “close and distinct relationship” is almost truistic (McFarlane 22). An exploration of the connection between Peer Gynt and Goethe’s Faust is an equally commonplace theme. Two of the most recurrent trends that pervade these studies of Peer Gynt¬—that Peer is a counter-Brand and that Peer is Faustian—are inaccurate. A less facile explanation would be that Peer and Brand, rather than being antitheses, are the obverse and reverse sides of a single coin. Similarly, Peer is not some réchauffé version of Faust; he is, instead, an ironic inversion of Goethe’s scholarly necromancer. Meyer begins his chapter on Peer Gynt by parroting one hundred plus years of Ibsen criticism: “Set in Norway, Africa, and Norway again during the nineteenth century, Peer Gynt tells of a man the exact opposite of Brand…” (25). Auden, too, echoes the masses by writing that Peer and Brand are “related to each other by being each other’s opposite” (442). But to the extent that Meyer and Auden both share the same conclusion, they differ in their method for reaching that conclusion. Meyer claims that Brand is indomitable and unwavering in his conviction that “religion has become too soft and should return to the single-minded austerity of the Old Testament” (22). It is true that Brand proselytizes an attitude of an all-or-nothing with severity. Textual examples abound of Brand’s firmness abound. Brand allows his mother to die without late rites because she will not bequeath every penny she has to the poor. She is willing to give nine-tenths of her money to charity, but wants to leave the rest to Brand as a legacy. This is not sufficient for Brand, who throughout the play declaims, “All or nothing. That / is my demand” (Ibsen 53). This attitude of Brand’s eventually leads to the death of his wife and child, and finally his own martyrdom. Conversely, Meyer claims that “[Peer Gynt is] a compromiser who thinks only of himself, and shuns work and suffering” (emphasis added, 25). On the surface Meyer’s assertion seems straightforward: Peer is a compromiser and Brand is not, therefore, they are opposites. But this argument is posited on the false premise that Peer is, indeed, a compromiser. Meyer does not illuminate his reasoning by referencing any specific passages that show Peer to be a compromiser. Yet others, who share his view, typically justify it by misreading an instance where Peer propounds his moral philosophy: The Gyntian self—it’s an army corps Of wishes, appetites, desires. The Gyntian self is a mighty sea Of whim, demand, proclivity— In short, whatever moves my own soul And makes me live to my own will. (102) Here Peer reveals himself to be a sort of sybaritic epicurean, but not a compromiser. If Brand behaved in this fashion, he would certainly be compromising his own ascetic ideals. But for Peer to behave in this way is for him to follow his own self-prescribed morality, not stoop away from it. Throughout the play Peer always conforms to the Gyntian self; he never compromises his self-satisfying philosophy. p.s. The titles should be underlines, I just can't underline them for a question.

Would it be possible to travel to the Schengen area without a return flight?

Would it be possible to travel to the Schengen area without a return flight?
Being a US citizen, I don't need a visa for less than 90 days of travel. I am going to get my masters degree in Norway (the program starts at the beginning of Sept.) and because of the program I'm in, I'm allowed to apply for a student residence permit in Norway (I am not required to do it before I go there). Consequently, I do not need to book a round trip ticket, but I want to go to Europe (Sweden and other areas) in June to visit relatives and travel. I'll be going through customs in Iceland if that makes a difference. I would be able to show that I had money to go back if I needed to, and would be able to show documents that I had a place as well as a scholarship at a university in Norway. When I go, I will be enrolled in the university in Norway (I just won't have the residence permit yet). I mentioned I was a US citizen just to remark that I don't need a visa to travel for 90 days. by no means do I think that this gives me advantage over someone else to travel and study in Europe.

A return trip ticket is usually required for tourists of those countries whose citizen are exempt from the visa requirement but present in increased risk of illegal immigration. Citizen of Chile, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, or some other Latin American countries might be denied entry if they cannot present a return flight ticket or an onward ticket to a country outside of the Schengen zone. Since citizen of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea and the United States of America may obtain residence permits for certain Schengen member countries without the need to hold a prior visa. They may in general be granted entry without a return flight ticket provided they are able to show their capacities to buy one (credit cards, ATM card, or traveller checks). Just present your passport and have your documents to apply for the Norwegian residence permit ready should you be asked for it. I recommend also to hold a printout of the website of UDI that states that you are eligible to apply for the residence permit in Norway. http://www.udi.no/Norwegian-Directorate-of-Immigration/Central-topics/Studies/How-do-I-apply-for-a-residence-permit-for-students/Can--I-apply--for-a-residence-permit-for-students-from-Norway/ ..

Usually you should prearrange your enrollment with the school and consequently your visa. You may end up wasting time and money, Being a US citizen does not put you above the rest.

Lets question unfair immigration over the years?

Lets question unfair immigration over the years?
My great grand parents immigrated from scandanvia, my great grand mother from norway, and my great grand father from sweden...they saved money for a ocean liner trip, got off at ellis island..they were given a check up, and their papers and sent on their way...to all of you people that hate "illegal immigrants"..they are immigrating the same way your decedents did..except for one thing now the rules have become so difficult that it alot of cases it is impossible for someone to legally immigrate to this country..sure if you have 10,000 america dollars and know the right person you can persuade someone to give you a visa.. but in most cases they put you on a list...lol 10-20-30 years to wait..OUR DESCENDANTS ONLY NEEDED MONEY TO TRAVEL AND A DREAM....what makes you think that our descendants were better or more worthy than the people today..WHEN THE IRISH CAME THEY WERE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST..when the jews came , when the Italians came..i can go on and on...they were given all the dirty jobs, like building the railroad and bridges..I look out my window with the knowledge that 3 immigrants are buried in the concrete of the bridge I can see..three worthless irish immigrants that know one cared about.."just keep pouring the concrete"....today it is the mexicans and others who we look at as worthless...but they need so much more than travel money and a dream...Thank god my family immigrated when it did..or i would be looking over MY SHOULDER waiting to be deported, because a dream is no longer enough.. Thats all youhave to say..the europeans learned english..lol, my husband came from el salvadore (he is legal)..when he was 13..he mastered english by the time he was 15 and just recieved his American P.H.D in Chemistry..do not lump people into categories..it just shows how black ones heart can get Mr. true pimp...know one ever said we didnt allow legal immigrants..we do..but may I ask all of the people reading this, how did your family arrive in america..Did they in fact go through ellis island as most did...it was easy for them..the very people that sit in congress today are 4th and 5th generation americans that had relatives just walk through ellis island..wow, it was okay for their families, but for others it is not..you talk about welfare and foodstamps..did you ever stop to think that if people were given the chance to make their american dream come true that they would...oh no, your right mexicans love cleaning vegetables at fruit stand for less than minimum wage, and would never consider getting a better job so they could afford a house and a car...you have got to be kidding me.. krollohare2..well how about this..i live down the block from a public housing project, you have to be a citizen to live in one. I have never seen a bunch of lazier american citizens in all my life..draining the system dry, taking public housing, welfare, food stamps, wic..and the like...lol, the mexicans that get up in the morning to wash toilets have more respect from me than these people..If the system is being drained dry it is not from immigrants it is FROM LAZY AMERICANS..the kind that when their rent goes up they just make another baby to get more welfare to pay the difference.. god help this country if we allow this to continue, but punish those who come and work like dogs at any job they can find.. To. I am gonna start a riot.... you seem to only see things you want t see....I never said all americans do is watch the mailbox..many are very hardworking..myself included..i work all day and go to college at night...that is not the point..the point is that people do not like todaysimmigrants because they are spanish speaking....but trust me..my hubby speaks english better than most americans..he has to he grades their college chemistry papers..and yes I have a problem with the segment of the american population that is lazy...see, my immigrant husband is paying taxes..and his taxes are paying for the housing of lazy americans..If my husband could come to this country at 13 not speaking a word of english, and managed to get his P.H.D in chemistry..then why do any born americans whine, whimper and expect hand outs..you are barking up the wrong tree if you think it is my husband that is the enemy of the american economy..it is not..

They came to become americans, not to reconquer territory to hand it off to Mexico. By the way, the US allows more legal immigrants then the rest of the world. The number of persons naturalized in the United States increased 58% from 660,477 in 2007 to an all-time record of 1,046,539 in 2008. America admitted more legal immigrants from 1991 to 2000 (between 10-11 million) than in any previous decade. And it isn't that difficult if you have needed skills. There are plenty of jobs that offer H-1 Visas to immigrants. However, it is correctly becoming more difficult for immigrants with criminal records to enter, and those with no job skills. I stand strongly behind that. Since we are a popular destination, we have the right to chose the best and brightest, not solve the problems of countries like Mexico by taking on the poor people they can't provide for. EDIT: Well, thats our system, and it's in place for a reason. You can't possibly compare 120 years ago to today. There was a strong need for unskilled workers back then as the country was being built up. In 1900, we had the same amount of territory we have today, with only 76 million people. Today we have over 300 million. Now, we need skilled workers such as engineers, computer technicians and health care workers. The times have changed, and the needs have changed, though we are STILL allowing more legal immigration then any other time in history. If we allow unlimited 3rd world immigration at this point of our history with the current economy, we will surely collapse and become a 3rd world economy ourselves. There are places with more liberal immigration policies, like Canada or the UK. People could always choose to go there. So, you need to get your facts straight.

100 years ago and then some, America had less than a third of its current population and there were more opportunities available. When your great grandparents came here it was legal to arrive and step off the boat, sign a log book and move on. Not everybody who came here did the dirty jobs. A lot did because they came here for a reason. If your great grandparents came here from Scandinavia maybe they did so because in reality, living there was miserable enough to get them to take a gamble and come here. People came to the U.S. for opportunity. They still do. Only now, there are fewer jobs and many people competing with them. That's all. Resources are stretched thin. That's why the rules are more difficult.
4 :
i agree.
5 :
I will have to agree with you to a point. When people came here there was opportunity for a better. We just started the age of invention and industrial revolution. Factories where going up everywhere to produce the goods that were being invented. When you have a large need for workers of all trades you have a DEMAND. The population of this country was small compared to other countries in the world and the American Dream was what most people wanted. As far as people being discriminated against you are so wrong. My father when he was a child remembers walking the streets in Phila 1920's and signs would be hung on the sides of buildings saying. "HIRING -- Irish need not apply or Germans need not apply or Italians need not apply or Catholics need not apply. This is how certain employers hired who they wanted to hire. The Irish lived in their communities and the Italians lived in their communities, and the Germans lived in their communities also. They were very segregated. But they all had one thing in common they all were learning or already speaking english. They did not snub their noses at what America stands for and they pulled their own weight. As far as the Irish who were poured into the bridge embankments well that was part of the job. I worked in a steel mill and if someone fell into the ladle of molten steel, first there was nothing left of him and second we didn't stop production for him. That was in the 1970's. Yes I am sure his family grieved but it was an accident. There was NO OSHA or MSHA. They weren't formed till the 1970's. It was a possible hazard of the job, they knew it when they got hired. Those people who fell into the concrete was an accident also. Someone grieved but do you really think all work should have stopped and torn apart which might take weeks, if not months because of an accident. We want people to immigrate to the U.S.A. All we want is it to be fair and not a FREE-FOR-ALL like it currently is. Stop demanding things, stop telling the U.S. Citizens what you want or what we owe you. Learn English and speak it. Show some respect toward the U.S.A. and what this country went thought to become the country it is. No it is not prefect but it is only 233 years old. Now we have a population who comes here demanding rights, takes large sums of taxpayers money 330 BILLION DOLLARS a year and give nothing back. They feel they are owed this. You tell me WHY? No it is not right for those Lazy Americans to suck off the system either. I have always pulled my on weight. Most Americans pull their own weight. But you are comparing apples and oranges. I guess the thumbs down was from someone who lived in the 1920's, lived in Phila, PA and knows better. Or just some " A " Hole in general.

Illegal is still illegal. Something worth having is worth working for and waiting for the legal route. Why dont you come live in the present. Every country in the world has immigration laws. We need to enforce them and the illegal problem would decrease.
7 :
"OUR DESCENDANTS ONLY NEEDED MONEY TO TRAVEL AND A DREAM....what makes you think that our descendants were better or more worthy than the people today"? If you haven't had any children yet, you don't have any DESCENDANTS. If you have children, then they wouldn't need to immigrate here if you had them here. But you do have ANCESTORS. So let me rephrase your question accordingly "OUR [ANCESTORS] ONLY NEEDED MONEY TO TRAVEL AND A DREAM....what makes you think that our descendants were better or more worthy than the people today"? Our ancestors were White. They came to the U.S. and became productive members of society, and helped the U.S. grow from the band of colonies that just got independence from Great Britain to the awesome country it is today. Today's illegal immigrants are mostly hispanic. These people come to this country, steal jobs from hard-working Amreicans, leech money and government services without paying taxes, create crime. Instead of making the United States a better place to live, they do the exact opposite, while sending money back to their home country. This is why the U.S. needs to keep them out. Also, they are not working jobs that no American would want to do. Who do you think collected garbage, mowed lawns, etc. (without creating crime and other problems) before mexicans came here?
8 :
So what does that have to do with today's illegal immigration ?And why does every argument for illegals always include LAZY AMERICANS does this include yourself and from your post you are in effect saying, that all of America does nothing but watch the mail box, so do you include yourself in this group, you did say all Americans so do you watch the mail box as well? the block from a public housing project, you have to be a citizen not true Obama's aunt is not a citizen and she lives in a public housing project and gets section 8,welfare,food stamps and you say you have to be a citizen to get all of this is laughable. You are just cherry picking the laws and making excuses and want the laws to not be the same for everybody.

I'm just glad my ancestors never left Norway for America. Otherwise I'd be an American now, eating lutefisk and pretending I was Norwegian, like the Americans do.

How many of you are against or for offshore drilling?

How many of you are against or for offshore drilling?
Norway is a beautiful country and they are enviormentally sound people and they are self-sufficient. And they also export. Why can't we. France runs almost all of its power on nuclear power and they store it underground. And we don't.? And for those of those who think that offshore drilling won't decrease gas and fuel prices. You're wrong. Keeping money out of foreign hand makes the dollar stronger. And since it's close to good old Uncle Sam artificial marketing wouldn't be a global thing. And also if it was a mistake to not start drilling years ago we need to start now. Yeah and I here there's no oil on that land. Correct me if I'm wrong...but that's just my understanding. Yeah but not like Norway. We aren't self-sufficient either. Yeah but not like Norway. We aren't self-sufficient either.

what makes you think oil compines will drill if they can off the coast?they've already have 68 million acres leased that they haven't drilled.infact congress is trying to force them to drill there we're the 3'rd largest producer of oil in the world
5 :
We export. Remember Love Canal? Three Mile Island? In our country we don't have good environmental track record by companies that aren't regulated.
6 :
We have offshore oil drilling the big oil companies are just pushing for more government handouts
7 :
If we don't, other countries will. Actually, they already are. So, the choice is, drill ourselves, with OUR environmental regulations & get the crude for ourselves, or allow other countries to do it, screw up our coastline with their more lax regulations, and then buy the oil from them at a higher price anyway? Hmmmm... let me think hard about this one.... Drill, baby, drill! I'm still for conservation & alternative energy R&D and all that, but for right now, lets face it.. we need the black gold.
8 :
Absolutely necessary and it is all the more damaging to the U.S. and its sovereignty to continue to put off drilling and the building of refining capacity, while we continue to search for alternative fuels (and it sure is not ethanol you idiots in D.C.). Typical political BS and far too little, too late. Dems are fools to embrace emotional and misguided greens. The will of the people (the few reasonable ones) never seems sway the politicians who know very little about what America needs to remain a great country and a constantly developing world power. The majority of our current politicians are useless appendages who do little more than hasten the downfall of this great country.
9 :
Definitely FOR it. (edit - I'm with you lasvegaspasses) I have heard that it is possible that $60 worth of each barrel of oil is speculation cost (investors betting that it will go even higher in price). If we started to provide more of our own oil for energy from our own land, no matter how or where we did it - the cost of oil would go down. Investors would bail out - making it go down even further. And best of all, foreign oil producers would lower their prices to compete in the market, just as they have before - lowering prices even more! I also support balance, however. Get the oil. Protect the environment. Always search for ways to improve our efficiency, reduce pollution, and discover / develop new forms of energy for us to grow and prosper. Protect our country and our people. We CAN have it all. God bless the United States of America, and the people that make it the U.S.A.!
