Why do Americans have such a twisted, manipulated view of Socialism?

Why do Americans have such a twisted, manipulated view of Socialism?
I asked the question why Socialist countries are surveyed as the happiest in the world, and I got this response: "So you admit Obama is a Socialist and violating is Oath of office by changing the country? Anyhow, Denmark along with the Netherlands are a Democracy, and Constitutional Monarchy! Here is a CURRENT list of socialist countries and I'm sure they would argue with your uneducated question/statement. The People's Republic of China Cuba North Korea...you can't tell me those people are happy! Vietnam" Okay, This is what I find extremely strange? Because those countries are Communist. I live in Australia, which elected the Australian Labor Party which has it's official ideology is Democratic Socialism. Norway is under the Norwegian Labor Party which also has it's official ideology as Socialism. (It's also the second wealthiest country in the world, after Luxembourg) Spain, Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, South Africa, Japan, Luxembourg are also under Socialist governments. Along with dozens of other Socialist governments. Communism and Socialism are related, But Communism is an extreme ideology that I don't approve of, and I don't think works at all. But whenever an American thinks of the world socialism, they think of some tyrannical authoratian rule? You can do whatever you want in Australia, you just have to pay higher taxes. I come from a middle/upper-class family, and I very much enjoy my life, I don't directly benefit from Socialism. (except from having better schools, hospitals, roads, healthcare, less income inequality, less poverty and less homeless people) I just believe it's ridiculous that people can make $45,000,000 a year sitting behind a desk in some corporation. Whilst some people don't even have a bed to sleep in. And im not saying people shouldnt be allowed to make $45,000,000. They should just be taxed far higher and that money should be distributed to those who have none. And Socialism doesnt make people lazy, Australias unemployment rate is half that of the USA. So you can't say Socialism makes people lazy and leech off welfare, it just helps close the gap between the extremely wealthy and the extremely poor. And, since almost every country is socialist now. There are very poor socialist countries (Venuzuela), and the two richest countries in the world are also socialist (Norway, Luxembourg). So I dont think it has much to do with overall wealth, more so of just how that wealth is distributed within that society. _____________________ The United States has one of the widest rich-poor gaps of any high-income nation today, and that gap continues to grow. In recent times, some prominent economists including Alan Greenspan have warned that the widening rich-poor gap in the U.S. population is a problem that could undermine and destabilize the country's economy and standard of living stating that "The income gap between the rich and the rest of the US population has become so wide, and is growing so fast, that it might eventually threaten the stability of democratic capitalism itself". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_of_living_in_the_United_States

Why do you care? Stop trying to change politics here. We are too smart for you. If you want to run Australia into the ground then by all means GO AT IT! But leave us Americans alone. Many Americans have come from socialist countries and know what it's like. How the hell do you accurately measure "happiness" anyways? Sounds like a load of Bullsh!t.

You wrote: "And im not saying people shouldnt be allowed to make $45,000,000. They should just be taxed far higher and that money should be distributed to those who have none." No they f*cking shouldn't be taxed at a higher rate. No money should be [re]distributed.

The way I see it, socialism should be like religion. You're either socialist or you don't want to be. Most Americans don't want to be. Most Australians do. I don't see any problems.

boy oh boy oh boy oh boy... YOU'RE gunna end up with more people who hate you than I have people who hate me ... for having an Aussie Opinion on Anything American... BUT ... It's ok .. BUT there's gunna be a hell of a lot that will take offense Good Luck :)

Leftover fears from the Cold War. Anything socialist or communist was the enemy and needed to be destroyed. That's why Americans never held their government responsible for the atrocities they funded and committed in South America under Reagan.

While I certainly agree with most of your claims. I am not a wide socialist in that view. I don't like the wealthy upper classes being in command while the poorer classes suffer. But I don't like the government in all our private lives and that tends to happen in Socialism. Also I don't believe in giving money to people who are poor simply because they refuse to work. If someone say has been laid off and is actively seeking work then sure he can file for monetary help. But some socialist theology is everyone get wealthy and do no work. I firmly believe in work for what you get and have a strong work ethic while enjoying freedom from big government. Again many Socialist theology I agree with, I just don't believe in government everyone and giving out money to everyone even if they don't work for anything.

Socialism is an economic and/or social system. Communism/Democracy/Monarchy/Republic/etc. is a governmental system. Most of Europe is Socialist-Capitalist. Their economic drivers are Capitalist. Their Social systems are Socialist. The US is a Capitalist society with a Constitutional Republic as a government system. Different countries have different ways of doing things. Trying to compare a country like the US with say, France is ridiculous. The sheer difference in population diversity in the US, combined with the numbers of citizens is so vastly different. Not to mention the massive amounts of money we spend on things like defense that many of those other countries just don't have to. Tell me, what's Norway's Army been doing lately? Or Luxembourg's? Trying to compare the US with any other country is impossible. The best way to compare it would be to say, take all of Europe and add in North Africa and half of the Middle East. And then come up with a system of functioning. GO!

Well you've got to remember that the American public at large is rather ignorant, in the 50's and the 60's we had "better red then dead" slogans and we've been bred to see things in a certain way, unfortunately with the Red-neck right wing the minute you talk about "sharing" or "spreading the wealth" to help less fortunate of course! They will scrounge what they can from there voter base and attempt to stop anything that would help people in bad economic situations, and sadly enough its all older white men, but i digress, back to socialism, the system itself for socialism is quite effective if you look at other social countries such as you've noted, unfortunately most americans fail to see this and will cling to older beliefs in an attempt to stop any form of change, also i might add that people from the european (and in your case based from Britain) countries you've got more a lean toward what we americans would refer to as "liberal" and the "left" even the most "Conservative" from Britain and australia would be either leaning left or "liberal" in the US, we have this foolish voter base of ignorant Christians and Red-necks who want things to stay the way they are even when they are inherently broken! One thing id love to mention i show the right wing spouts "SOCIALISM!!!! OMG!!!" like its a plague or something, Obama is in-fact somewhat close to socialistic in ideology, but this IS NOT a bad thing!!!! most people just don't get it, as long as the government is regulated to within certain rights and taxes are a bit higher, does that truly matter if your supplied with health care? and people being helped by the government to have better lives? I understand the fears of "1984" which have been brought up in many circumstances, but this does not make it true, most the things we hear about in america when the media refers to countries with "socialized medicine" is bullshit that the Right wing happens to push.

Why do socialists demand access to everything and accept responsibility for nothing? You say that you are from a relatively wealthy stratum of society. Your words would be more impressive if you'd been born in a ghetto and become a successful professional. You are what people call a "champagne socialist." Tony Blair and Anthony Wedgwood Benn of the British Labour Party were too. If one has no fear of losing ones own security, one can afford to be magnanimous toward "the poor." Working people, who suffer from taxation, are acutely aware of neighbours who live off the dole. That is why conservatism is by no means limited to the upper classes, and that is why Margaret Thatcher was so successful. Lastly, socialism is closely identified with trade unionism - an institution that long ago had validity but today is no more than legalized extortion. In reality, Unions are corporations in the advocacy business and whatever gains they make for their members, they always make greater gains for themselves. Other than that, I think socialism is just peachy.
20 :
Socialism and its nastier sister Communism have never been successful anywhere. ONLY a Market based Economy-capitalism(where there's incentive to develop and take risks...) with limited government intervention such as the USA have been successful. The USA, contrary popular belief is NOT a Democracy, but is in fact a Constitutional Republic. Let's get back to the Constitution specifically, the 10th Amendment on clarity on how Obama and botox woman overstepped the amendment and created Tyranny of The Majority.

Hard facts about the EU vs USA http://www.timbro.se/bokhandel/pdf/9175665646.pdf The Sweden Myth http://mises.org/daily/2259 Those are the facts. “Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” Winston Churchill
22 :
As some others have pointed out, the USA has been a capitalist hegemony since the early 90's, and ceaseless anti-socialist propaganda has removed almost all traces of political openness from the public opinion. Your average american believes that capitalism is the only pure form of government economy, and associates socialism with communism and fascism.
23 :
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money. -- Margaret Thatcher It would be nice if you linked to your study, b/c its diff to know where your data comes from. But here is one study that says happiness is based upon, "Family, social and community networks that bring joy to one's life." (According to 2005 editorial, in the British Medical Journal authored by Dr. Tony Delamothe). http://www.forbes.com/2009/05/05/world-happiest-places-lifestyle-travel-world-happiest.html The other thing that makes this study suspect is that it was done by the UN. But in the US, there are about 1.2 million births every year to unwed mothers. That is a hard life, and I would like to know what it is in other countries. But I don't think the mothers of the 1.2 million per year would be really happy after a year of so.http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/data-reports/congress/tanft51.htm So you can see there has been a breakdown in the family unit (due to liberal policies, like welfare, etc.). The gov encourages childbirth by paying for it. Perhaps those are the unhappy people? Also, with US unemployment over 10%, lots of unhappy people there too. As for socialism, the basic issue is who do you want in charge of your life, you or the government. "It is man versus the state, or: individual rights versus totalitarian government -- which means: capitalism versus socialism." Ayn Rand The Founders of the US & authors of the Constitution, feared centralized government because it takes the power away from the states, and once gone, is just about impossible to get back. George Washington said "Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master." That is a view many people share, and we are experiencing the truth of it today. Barry and the democrat party are governing by force. The majority of the people did not want the health-care bill, but they got it. We got central planning, and had a totalitarian solution. Socialism, at work from the US Congress. (There will be hell to pay this Nov when we have elections for congress.) "[T]he States can best govern our home concerns and the general government our foreign ones. I wish, therefore...never to see all offices transferred to Washington, where, further withdrawn from the eyes of the people, they may more secretly be bought and sold at market." -- Thomas Jefferson, author of Declaration of Independence, our founding document. If you are happy that is good. We should all be free to choose how we live, and the maximum amount of freedom to do that is capitalism.
24 :
One of your own -- Rupert bloody Murdoch -- has about 99% to do with this. There's a lot of right wing lies and propaganda passing for news. People are deliberately misinformed.
25 :
The answer is simple. The political right in America needs to ADMIT there is a problem with wealth distribution in America. Like a drug addict or an alcoholic, they need to ADMIT that the market, when left alone, does EXACTLY what Karl Marx said it would. It creates monopoly power in just a few. Once admitted, the solution needs to be something other than social transfer payments. They need to influence the market to distribute fairly. One way would be to give tax incentives to companies to pay DOMESTIC employees more, and stop OUTSOURCING. There are other ways. But will our democracy ever get this right? Friends, after what we've seen over the last decade, I think the answer is clear. No way.

Call your airline and ask, depends on the type of ticket and other things.
2 :
Check on the airlines website there are requirements on dimensions as well as weight. Typical weight restrictions are either 5kg or 7kg but USA may be different. if you can not see the web site then telephone the airline and ask. +l====== ======= ====== ======l+ +-........Oops - now in West Java...........+ +-..Touring Muslim Countries in Asia....+ +l====== ======= ====== ======l+
3 :
Best thing is to visit the airline's website and find out for certain what they allow you to carry, and how much both for carry on and checked luggage. Some airlines do restrict by weight, others use a size policy for carry on, which ever it is, remember it either needs to fit under the seat in front of you, or be placed in an overhead lockers.

Why life is so f....g unfair??? Why do people live better in some other countries like America and in other?
Why do the majority of people live better in other parts of Europe like in Norway people are rich. There kids are get used to get a mobile phone at the age of 9 or 10. They have a welfare state. But in other parts of Europe like in Serbia or in Hungary the majority of people are poor and they just make ends meet and have the bare basics or even less in some cases. In Africa it is more worse, kids have disease and there are many infected people with AIDS and they have nothing, they even don't have any home, and there are many refugees, but in America there are people who are fat as they eat a lot of fast food and other food and they have cars and homes and relative good paid jobs, why life is so unfair that those people who live in poorer countries have much low standard of living and they have either so little money or simply no money at all. And Americans complain about high oil prices at the pump. Ridiculous. They have big SUV-s and they complain about oil prices, they should pay price

I know what you mean and understand but whenever I think about stuff like that, life just gets depressing. I've found that it's better to think of solutions to the problem than to think of only the problem itself. Just worry about your own situation for now. After you help yourself, than you can find a way to help the rest of the world. That's exactly what I plan to do..... And by the way, I think it's great that you're concerned about others. It's nice to know that there are other selfless beings out there......

what do you suggest? theres alot of struggling people everywhere and then there are the rich and well to do ... ive been in some poorer countries where they hardly had any money or expensive possesions but there was much more peace and family unity ...which is better really?

Life is never fair. That's what gives us our motivation to do more in life is to beat the odds that we were given. Without life being fair we would have no successes, there would be no challenge, there wouldn't be ANYTHING to make anyone better! One thing that gives poor people the advantage (if they choose to take it) is to overcome the odds! Those people are the people who truly help society and the ones in need because they know. It's pretty fair to be humanist v. not caring at all. Don't you think?

such is the way of the world

What the western world has was built by the westerners. They had a better system. Nothing falls from the sky and life isn't fair, it is a jungle. The Gazelle that is caught by the lion doesnt think life is fair either.
8 :
Government of different countries have their priorities with many just enriching themselves while in power instead of distributing the money to the poor. Norway is good because there is less corruption and the people have good employment opportunities. Unlike in poor countries, people are not entitled to many things because those in power limits the circulation of money on the politicians who usually control the businesses.
9 :
I know what you mean! Its very hard to understand why. You would only hope that the people with money give back to charities and communities. Like Bill Gates he has donated I think 75-80% of his wealth to charities for Aids and the like, we need more people like him in this world! The problem is we all have been so self engrossed that we don't really care about anything that doesn't affect us, whch is a sad state to be in. So to all who are reading this please do your bit to help make the world a better place for everyone not just You!(Know it sound corny but its true). ps. I'm not a hippie :)
10 :
It's not Life that's unfair. It's greed that is unfair. It's lust for power that is cruel. It's social conditioning that makes people blind. And it's questions like yours that cast a small spark of light into the darkness. Thank you.
11 :
I live in the USA and I agree that some countries have more poor people and lower standards of living than others. I do not KNOW for sure why this is. I suppose it is a combination of things. The governments and the economical systems are probably one reason. Another reason must be how many of the people get good educations. If you happen to live in a country where many of the technological advances are made, you are in a position to where you will have access to these advances first. Americans have always been people that think they can right every wrong. They are generous people as you can see by the charities that go to other countries for disaster aid and foreign aid. They are becoming more obese as they eat more unhealthy food and get less exercise. American's morals are going to pot as well as the morals of the rest of the world.Americans bitch and complain about many ridiculous things but they do not mean to offend anyone. Hope this helped.
12 :
I doubt it. Not as easy as you think.
13 :
We are all on a journey...if you don't like the way you live you should improve...the United State of America has programs here to help the people who are poor....as you move into the future life gets more expenses and for us paying 1.50 at the pump is better than paying 3.00...we have rent, we pay for water, we pay for elec, we pay for food, we pay for education....we pay for car insurance, health care, and because we do this we have improve the way we live....we are trying to help the world but some people just don't like us.....American are people from: Africa, Serbia, Hungary, Paris, England, China, Japan, koran, ....we are just not one race, we are all the races....so if you don't like it where you are at come to America...I came here when i was 5 from Puerto Rico and have live here for 45 years and i can tell you we are a good country and we do help the world...
14 :
Look people should stop making blanket statements about America and how Americans live.....Visit poor town USA, hell visit the ghetto in the next American big city that you visit and tell me whether you will still be saying that b***s**t

Was Obama's $1.4 million dollar Nobel prize a bribe?

Was Obama's $1.4 million dollar Nobel prize a bribe?
The Nobel Peace Prize recipient was chosen by members of the government of Norway and it was specifically and clearly given to Obama not for what he had done, but for what they wanted him to do. Geir Lundestad, secretary of the Prize committee said they gave him the prize because he “put the accent on international cooperation, the United Nations, dialogue, negotiation, the struggle against climate change and disarmament.” In other words, these are the kinds of things they wanted him to do more of. Struggle against climate change, lay down his arms, and chat with the United Nations. Mmmm. Mmmm. Mmmm. Obama accepted the $1.4 million dollar bribe. He gave the money to charities, which was an attempt to make himself look good. The point is that he took possession of the the money and controlled how it would be used. He benefited from the money by spending it on something that might improve his image. Since Obama has failed to deliver, will international socialists want the money back?

No and it must be hard to live thinking that everyone is a socialist. Paranoia is treatable.

It may have been intended as one. But bribery implies payment for a quid pro quo, and I don't see Obama doing that much for world peace. But the peace prize committee doesn't always make great decisions. Hitler was nominated in 1938, and Gandhi was nominated several times but never won the prize.

How can America afford to pay for healthcare reform?

How can America afford to pay for healthcare reform?
Universal healthcare that would give everybody health insurance would be great. Many European countries and Canada have it. But there are few points that I would like to make. -First off, America has over 300 million people where these European countries like Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, etc., and Canada don't even have half the population that America does. So insuring 300 million plus would be incredibly expensive. -America is in a major budget deficit and it seems like it is not going to be reduced any time soon. And I know that spending and spending and printing more money will cause inflation to go up and make it even more expensive. Correct? -If Americans want universal coverage they would have to make some sacrifices by accepting cuts in government funding towards other programs. (Public schools, faith based initiatives, defense, social welfare for women who have too many kids, etc.) Government can't solve everything at once. Sorry. So my main point is that I would like to see a universal system that gives everyone coverage. But seriously, how can America afford to pay for it at this time?

In Canada, most private health-care is illegal. All hospitals in Canada are funded by the government without exception. Which means that it's all non-profit. The government collects taxes and pays for everyone's health-care without any shareholders of companies making direct profits out of it. USA now spends a lot more money per person on its health-care than any other country in the world. And the reason why US health-care is so much more expensive is because it's privatized. A lot of companies and businessmen make a lot of money out of it. If USA needs to save money on its health-care. Then doing it the Canadian way would save USA an awful lot of money. But nobody likes to loose profits, even if it's for the good of the country. And that's why it's so hard for USA to create a universal health-care system.
2 :
If we can spend trillions on a dumb war, we can reform the healthcare system.
3 :
Universal health care is not = universal insurance You are 100% right that universal insurance will fail. Let me just point to you the difference between universal health care and universal insurance. In universal health care you pay 12,000-10,000 depending on income into the government fund to cover health coem tax time. In universal insurance you pay 20,000 a year you pay half and the employer pays the other half, which is 10,000 for you both. This is why I as a conservative oppose universal insurance. 1. The government doesn't need to make billion of dollars in profit, private companies do, if the CEO likes his job. Shareholders don't care how much people you saved, they want to see how much money their investment in an insurance company made 2.Insurance is a ponzi scheme, like social security and it will go broke just like social security 3. the "profits" of private health insurance companies are not profits they are hidden taxes and you as a fellow conservative & tax payer ought to recognize and should be mad as hell like me. 4. We as a nation have control of the government and zero control over the decisions of private enterprises. 1. Forget insurance. Insurance like car insurance and health insurance are big fat scams. 20% of the cost of an insurance company are paying off lawyers to tie people up in courts so you don't have to pay money. This works very well when your client is sick with cancer and can't afford treatment. 50% of people who sue health insurance companies die before the case is decided. Insurance works like this, 1 million people pay 10,000 for insurance. The average cost of a sick person=30,000. If everyone claims in 1 year the company goes broke with 30 billion dollar in debt. So this ponzi scheme takes one payers money to pay off the other hoping not to get caught. I'm sure your wondering well madoff got caught so will these guys. Well if Madoff hired lawyers to sue 50% of his clients who were sick or dying instead of paying out money he would be called an insurance company. I In this example insurance company will only make 10 billion a year if too much people get sick(over 8 billion in cost), it denies those people coverage and says sue me, or your not covered for THAT illness. These 2 billion dollars to 28 billion dolars show up in emergency rooms and get treatment and cause us to pay higher taxes. Now why should people who already pay $10,000 and companies that pay $10,000 have to pay an additional $20,000 in coverage when claims are denied? See if your a private company you must make a PROFIT. so by nature you deny some sick people with legal tricks. This is why people say we cannot afford to not to fix healthcare. The insurance companies levy a 20,000 tax on every man woman and child they deny a claim on tax payers and businesses who are already paying this. Hence America has the highest cost in the world There are 2 solutions. -Make it downright illegal for companies to deny claim. -Have the government run the "insurance" so that no one is denied and we only pay once. Hey its better to pay $10,000 tax to a government run company once for care than to pay 10,000 twice and have no insurer. -Lastly I did not even mention the scams that hospitals run against insurance companies. Like hospitals charge people $75 a day for a pillow and $50 for a 10 cent tynelo tablet. Why? When a hospital is run by a private enterprise the focus is to make money and milk the patient who has no choice but to pay for every cent. When a hospital is run by a semi-government organization the idea is to be effective as possible, Your bonus is not tied to profits, you do not benefit by ripping off people monetarily. If the government charges itself $75 for a pillow no one loses or gains. If a private hospital charges a patient covered by insurance or the government $75 for a pillow, that private hospital that saw 50,000 people on beds just made 8.75 million dollars. So if the government paid for those emergency visits, then you are now pay 8.5 million dollars more tax. If a insurer paid for it, and its limit is 8 billion in pay outs, its now denying an addition 283 VALID claims of people who could be dying of legitimate diseases that they are covered for.
